    Adopt-a-Backroad Litter Pick-up Day on
    Eastside Road

It’s time once again for our semi-annual litter pick-up program.
The roadside litter cleanup will take place Sunday, May 26, beginning at 9:00 A.M. Start: corner of Old Red and Eastside Road. All equipment will be supplied. Following the event, meet at the Bear Republic in Healdsburg for a club-sponsored 'thank you' lunch.
Believe it or not, it’s actually fun: a nice walk along a country road, doing a good deed, then lunch, on the club’s tab. To sign up or to learn more about the project...

The tour roster is limited to 45 participants (including support staff of seven--including sags, food staff, etc--leaving 37 slots for participants). Entrants are logged in chronological order. A wait list will be kept for those who register after the first 37.

Click here for a 46-page preview of the tour, including many photos, detailed descriptions of the stages, and all maps, route slips, and elevation profiles (3.5 mg file).

This is a camping tour and follows our usual format of having trucks haul all personal and club camp supplies and luggage between each stage, with sags supporting the riders along each stage. It is a cooperative tour, in that all participants will share in the chores, from loading the trucks to keeping the camp organized to assisting with meal prep and clean-up. For more information on how we organize our tours, click here for a four-page tour primer.

The Central Coast Tour starts and ends in Monterey and heads south down the legendary Big Sur coast, then east and north along the quiet backroads of San Luis Obispo and San Benito Counties. It returns to Monterey via Carmel Valley. With longer and shorter options each day, it is appropriate for both moderate and advanced riders. All camps have showers.

    Saturday, June 1

Drive in our car pool fleet from SRCC warehouse to Monterey (4-5 hour drive). Stay in a city-run camp on the edge of the Del Monte Forest. Optional 11-mile prologue ride in the afternoon explores Monterey Bay waterfront.

    Sunday, June 2

Stage 1: Monterey to Lime Kiln State Park

    70 or 61 miles, 4500' up, 4800' down

After a loop around the famed 17-mile drive in Monterey and Carmel, the classic run down Hwy 1 along the cliffs of Big Sur. Interesting hike to a pretty waterfall at camp.

    Monday, June 3

Stage 2: Lime Kiln to San Simeon State Park

43 miles, 2500' up and down; optional 13-mile out-&-back from camp

The balance of Big Sur's coastal run. A short day to allow for a visit to Hearst Castle after the stage (optional). For those who don't want to do Hearst Castle but do want to do more miles, a hilly out-&-back from camp, up San Simeon Creek.

    Tuesday, June 4

Stage 3: San Simeon to Santa Margarita Lake

    67 miles, 5000' up, 4000' down, 57 miles, 3000' up, 2000' down

Further down the coast to near Morro Bay, then inland, over a big ridge, to a quiet campsite on the shore of a pretty lake in a county park. Lake and swimming pool for getting wet (in addition to new showers). Long route follows a huge climb into the hills and a big descent back to the coast, while the short route stays closer to the beach.

    Wednesday, June 5

Stage 4: Santa Margarita Lake to Paso Robles

    74 miles, 4800' up, 5400' down; 63 miles, 4000' up, 4600' down

One of the nicest cycle-touring days ever (as long as it's not too hot). Tiny, quiet roads meandering through empty countryside south of Paso Robles, all beautiful and all scaled to the speed of a bike. Camp at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles.

    Thursday, June 6

Stage 5: Paso Robles to Mission San Antonio de Padua

    68 miles, 6000' up, 5200' down; 61 miles, 5000' up, 4200' down; 51 miles, 3900' up, 3100' down

More pretty, tranquil roads, this time north of Paso Robles, heading for Mission San Antonio, locked up like a time capsule in the middle of the Fort Hunter Liggett army base. Three options, each a little harder (or easier), but none of them too challenging. Camp in a private wood behind the mission.

    Friday, June 7

Stage 6: Mission San Antonio to Pinnacles National Monument

61 miles, 3200' up and down; 52 miles, 3200' up and down; Optional 6-mile out-&-back from camp

Across "America's Salad Bowl" (the produce fields of the Salinas River Valley, through King City and up to the east trailhead of Pinnacles National Monument. Mostly quiet and remote roads. Camp has a swimming pool near our group sites.

    Saturday, June 8

Stage 7: Pinnacles NM to Carmel Valley or Monterey

To Carmel Valley: 65 miles, 4800' up, 5800' down; 61 miles, 4000' up, 5000' down

To Monterey: 83 or 79 miles, plus some modest elevation gain beyond Carmel Valley

Begin with a 3.5-mile hike from east to west through the geological wonderland of Pinnacles National Monument. Then ride downhill across the Salinas River Valley and up and over Cahoon summit (highest point on tour) and finish up with the idyllic run along the length of beautiful Carmel Valley. 65-mile (or 83-mile) option explores one more climb out of Carmel Valley. Riders have the option of finishing in Carmel Valley Village and being sagged back to Monterey. Or they can ride those final miles, back through Carmel and along another section of the 17-mile Drive to camp. Spend a final night in the camp where the tour began.

    Sunday, June 9

    Return to Santa Rosa.

    Terrible Two and Terrible 200K
    Volunteer Sign-up

Fellow SRCC members (and others who are willing): it’s time to put out the call to the generous and dedicated volunteers we need annually to staff our prestigious double century, the Terrible Two. As many of you know, your club needs loads of volunteers in order to effectively stage this event. Many people have enjoyed volunteering on the TT in past years and return over and over, so we’re not starting from scratch. But we always need to add staff here and there. This is particularly true this year, as we are adding a 200-K option to the event and will be expecting nearly double the usual number of riders (possibly 500 in total).

Most of our rest stop chairs and other key volunteers are returning, so we are asking for folks to augment their returning staffs. Most volunteer duties take place on the day of the event itself (Saturday, June 15), but there are also many things needing to be done in the days leading up to the ride and on the Sunday immediately after. The Terrible Two is not anything on the scale of the Wine Country Century, in terms of the number of participants, but the course is twice the length, way, way out in the boonies, and much harder, so there is lots of ground to cover and many interesting chores to do. It’s a more intimate event, and the much smaller number of riders is generally so appreciative of the support we offer them. We think most past volunteers would say it’s a rewarding and fun experience to be a part of this very challenging ride on our home turf.

    Tasks include:

    --warehouse pre-event chores

    --truck loading pre-event

    --course marking

    --event start assistance

    --rest stop staffs

    --sag driver

--event finish staff (including food service)

    --clothing sales

    --after-event cleanup

    --lots of other things!

If you have the time and can help, please register as a TT volunteer. We’ll add you to the volunteer pool and get in touch in the coming weeks to set you up with a job. There is a place at the registration page to express your preferences in terms of times available, special skills or to request a specific task.

    Thanks!

    Rick Sawyer—TT Co-Chair

    Thursday Fixed Gear Ride

The Thursday Fixed gear ride is on again, noon from Spoke Folk Cyclery, 201 Center St, Healdsburg.  Pace is C to D.   This will be a weekly event.  So get the fixed gear out and get a good workout, riders with geared bikes are also welcome.  Ride time is about an hour.
The route is relatively flat so a big gear of 75" or so works well.

SRCC 300K Brevet RUSA Route # 411 Registration is open but closes Wednesday night, Oct 9

There are no great hills to cross, but we would hate to classify the ride along the Pacific coast and out to the Lighthouse as just rollers. Maximum elevation is only 500', but it adds up. It's a long run up the coast from Pt. Reyes to Jenner and typical headwinds can make it seem longer
