Northwest Oregon Tour Itinerary and Fast Factoids

August 4-12

Nine days • Seven stages • 434-522 miles • 25,000'-34,000'

REGISTER here
(5 slots available as of 6 July)

The tour roster is limited to 45 participants (including support staff of seven--including sags, food staff, etc--leaving 38 slots for participants). Entrants are logged in chronological order. A wait list will be kept for those who register after the first 38.

Click here for a 49-page preview of the tour, including many photos, detailed descriptions of the stages, and all maps, route slips, and elevation profiles. (4 mg file.)

This is a camping tour (except for two motel nights at start and finish). The tour follows our usual format of having a large truck haul all personal and club camp supplies and luggage between each stage. It is a cooperative tour, in that all participants will share in the chores, from loading the truck to keeping the camp organized to assisting with meal prep and clean-up. For more information on how we organize our tours, click here for a four-page tour primer.

Saturday, August 4: Drive (in car pool fleet) from SRCC warehouse to Corvallis, Oregon (a 10 to12-hour drive); spend night in motel. (Cost of motel and meals in Corvallis not included in tour.)

Sunday, August 5

Stage 1: Corvallis to Champoeg State Park

75 miles, 3300' up, 3400' down

Heading north up the Willamette Valley on mostly rolling roads through either woods or agriculture countryside. Quiet roads and a quiet landscape. Not spectacular but pleasantly rural. Stay in an excellent group site in a beautiful park. Showers.

Monday, August 6

Stage 2: Champoeg State Park to Vernonia

68 miles, 4500' up, 4000' down

More miles through farmlands today, but also more variety, with bigger climbs (and descents), and a good deal more deep forest. The final 21 miles are on a brand new bike path through dense forest…Oregon’s first linear trail state park. Camp at the high school in the tiny town of Vernonia. Showers in the high school may be closed for construction.

Tuesday, August 7

Stage 3: Vernonia to Seaside

72 miles, 3300' up, 3900' down

Heading west to the coast through endless broadleaf forest. It’s the same all day: mile after mile of rolling terrain, cycling along quiet, pretty roads amidst the dappled shade of overhanging trees. Only a couple of climbs, with entertaining descents after each. Overnight on the campus of Seaside Middle School, within walking distance of the beach. Showers.

Wednesday, August 8

Stage 4: Seaside to Cape Lookout State Park

71 miles, 5000' up and down

61 miles, 4200' up and down

Our first day on the coast, although many of the miles will be spent inland, in quiet little valleys away from the congestion of Hwy 101. But there are good sections on the coast as well, with some spectacular scenery. Long option explores the hilly Cape Meares Loop, one of the prettiest, most pristine sections on the Oregon coast. Camp in a state park right on the beach. Showers.

Thursday, August 9

Stage 5: Cape Lookout State Park to South Beach State Park

73 miles, 4800' up and down

Similar to yesterday’s coastal stage: a mix of side roads meandering through quiet woods and meadows (avoiding Hwy 101), and several sections right out on the beach, or above the beach on rocky cliffs. South Beach State Park is on the south side of the resort city of Newport, just across the mouth of the Yaquina River. We will camp here in a quiet, isolated group site for two nights. Showers.

Friday, August 10

Stage 6: Newport layover day…optional ride

33-46-65 miles, 2000'-3000' up and down

Ride all or part of an optional stage that heads upstream along the beautiful Yaquina River to the town of Toledo. The configuration of the route allows riders to tailor their ride to their level of ambition. Or don’t ride at all: stay in camp and enjoy the beach. We will be organizing a visit to the state-of-the-art Oregon Coast Aquarium in the afternoon — after the ride — for those who are interested. It’s right next door to camp.

Saturday, August 11

Stage 7: South Beach to Corvallis

85 miles, 4600' up, 4400' down

100 miles, 6300' up, 6100' down

Two long stages today but worth the extra effort. Down the coast a bit more, then inland along the pretty Alsea River. The shorter route stays close to the river until it climbs through the Coast Range and drops back into the Willamette Valley. The long route wanders off on lovely little roads through the middle of nowhere. The long route’s climb through the mountains is a little longer and a little higher, but neither stage is all that difficult. Return to the motel in Corvallis where the tour began.

Sunday, August 12

Drive home to Santa Rosa.
